Way back when I first started Revolutionary Gardens, it didn’t occur to me that clients might call at crazy hours. So one Sunday night at around 9 pm my phone rang. It was one of my clients, clearly beyond sloppy drunk. “Dave!” he shouted. “We’re all out on the deck and it smells %^#&ing amazing. We need to know what these shrubs are you planted!” Ever since then, Viburnum x juddii has been known as “the Drunk Dial Plant” around Rev Gardens World HQ.
Is Juddii Viburnum really that amazing? In a word… omg YES! Seriously, if you think lilac smells wonderful, you’d better sit down, buckle up, and clear your calendar for the rest of the day because we’re going to blow your mind. The fragrance is sweet but not cloying, floral but not in a gross perfume-y way. During a few too-short weeks in spring the shrubs set clusters of pink-tinged buds that open to reveal brilliantly white flowers. It’s not the most exciting shrub the rest of the year, but it more than earns its spot in the landscape.
Viburnum x juddii is a deciduous woody shrub that gets to around 6-8 feet tall and wide. It’s pretty easy to keep it pruned and looks great even if you never touch it.
The deer mostly leave it alone, although I have seen them nibble on the flower buds. Greedy jerks.
Sold in 3 gallon containers.
