Virginia Native Plants Landscape Design

Why include Virginia Native Plants in Your Landscape Design?

I’ve been a landscape designer for over twenty years. When I first started, it was incredibly difficult to find quality, reliable sources for native plants. The last decade has seen an explosion of interest in Virginia native plants landscape design. We now have ready access to a wide assortment of beautiful plants that you’ll love to have in your home landscape!

Native plants provide food and habitat for a wide array of critters. The more native plants you can incorporate into your landscape design, the more birds, pollinators, and other animals you’ll support. Native plants provide food sources, like berries and flowers. Native plants also offer vital habitat for nesting and foraging. As we lose natural spaces to development, your backyard becomes a more critical part of the overall ecosystem.

All that said, don’t think committing to native plants means compromising on your dream backyard! If you want lush, layered plantings with multi-season interest you can get that with Virginia native plants in your landscape design.

Native plants work for every style

If you hear “native plants” and you immediately think of a wild woodland garden and nothing else, I have some good news for you (although wild woodland gardens are awesome!). Virginia native plants lend themselves to all different styles, from traditional to modern and everything in between.

Virginia Native Plants Landscape Design – plants that I Love !

I have a large pool of nurseries and growers that I use to source my plants. Part of what makes my job exciting and rewarding is finding “new” plants to incorporate into my designs. I also have a palette of Virginia native plants that I love using in different ways. There are some great online resources like Plant Nova Natives and Plant Virginia Natives.

These are plants that have proven to be beautiful and dependable in the home (and commercial) landscape. Here are a few of my favorites. You can click on the images to learn more about each plant.
