As Nickelback said “we all just wanna be big rock stars” and when it comes to boulder work in Culpeper VA – so do we! Working with large boulders is an art and a skill, and it’s a lot of fun. Here are some examples of projects we’ve done.
Fredericksburg boulder walls

For this Fredericksburg landscape design project we had to create planting beds along a steep hill. For most of the front of the house, we crafted drystacked fieldstone retaining walls studded with fieldstone boulders. When we got to the bottom, we saw an opportunity to go big! The bottom terrace is constructed using large boulders to retain the grade and terminate the drystacked walls.
Great Falls boulder garden walls and firepit patio

On this project the client asked if we could tuck a firepit area back behind the pool. The grades were challenging but they did not want a formal look. Did someone say boulders? Large boulders define the planting beds and help retain the soil until the plants can fill in along the flagstone path.

We also used large boulders to create a seat wall behind the firepit. Even the firepit patio is bigger than usual – rather than use typical 1.5-2″ thick flagstone, the patio was built using 6″ thick Colonial slabs.
Great Falls Accent Boulders

A few years ago we had the opportunity to design the landscape for a gorgeous custom home in Great Falls. I searched high and low to find the perfect stone for the bed in the center of the driveway.
Fredericksburg Entry Boulder Feature

I’m very vocal about my feelings for “typical” entry columns: boring. Everyone has ’em. What’s the point? For this property, rather than build boring columns we let Nature create our columns. We just set them in place and worked out fieldstone entry walls to boulders. It’s hard to get a sense of scale, but that boulder is 5 ft from the top to the ground. Another two feet are buried below grade for stability. As usual, Juan did an outstanding job on this one.
