I love a landscape design with lots of color. In fact, when asked, I tend to describe my preferred color palette as “obnoxious”. How do I make those colors and textures pop? I pick the right backdrop.
Otto Luyken Laurels provide that perfect backdrop. These dark, broadleafed evergreens will grow into a thick, full hedge when planted appropriately (I like 54″ on center, personally). Whatever flowers you plant in from of them are immediately amplified. White gets turned up to 10. Magenta gets turned up to 11. And so on.
Technically, Otto Luykens get a small white flower on them in the springtime. It’s not a bold or exciting bloom, though. It’s more just there because evolution decided flowers are sexy and useful for keeping the species going. No, these laurels are exciting for how they can enhance everything planted around them. Growing to 3-4 ft tall and spreading up to 6-8 feet, be careful not to jam them too close together and you’ll have a terrifically happy hedge or foundation planting.
I like to get in there with hand pruners once or twice a year and keep them all relatively even in size. Otherwise, Otto Luyken Laurels won’t demand much of you.
Sold as 24-30″ plants, may be in a container or ball and burlap.
